Welcome to The Ethnological Museum of the Huerta de Murcia in Alcantarilla
This museum is devoted to the study of the ethnic culture in the orchard of Murcia.
It was opened in 1968 and declared a National Artistic Monument in 1982.
The very moment we come across the main entrance, we, the visitors, are transported to the past centuries in this part of the Region of Murcia.
Our visit will be divided in two parts: a visit to the outside area and a visit to the inside of the building itself.
In the outdoor area of the museum we can see a garden, some orchards with typical fruit trees and vegetables,
traditionally grown by the local people (huertanos); next to the orchards, there is some old farm machinery and an interesting collection of carriages.
Probably the most interesting building outside is a fully equipped Murcian Barraca.
This is the typical house in the orchards of Murcia where we can see some of the everyday household
objects (pottery, earthenware, some furniture, etc) that our ancestors used for the different daily
works and tasks. Next to the house, we can see a Moorish oven and a well.
But the most impressive in this outside area are the water wheel or
Noria and the aqueduct. These are the hydraulic remains which belonged to a traditional
irrigation system of the orchards of Murcia.
Inside the museum building and following the map, we can visit different rooms containing:
